Wulingyuan

Avatar Mountains (Wulingyuan Scenic Area)

The floating sandstone pillars that inspired the Hallelujah Mountains in Avatar. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is the heart of Zhangjiajie — but knowing when and how to visit makes all the difference.

Entrance Fee

¥248 (4-day pass)

Opening Hours

7:00am – 6:00pm

Zone

Wulingyuan

Local Tip

Arrive at the South Gate by 7:30am on weekdays to beat the crowds. Weekends in October are brutal — plan accordingly.

What It Actually Is

Wulingyuan is a 264 km² protected area containing over 3,000 quartzite sandstone pillars, many over 200 meters tall. The formations were caused by hundreds of millions of years of water erosion. James Cameron’s team visited in 2008, and the rest is cinematic history.

The ¥248 entrance ticket covers 4 consecutive days — enough time to explore the main areas without rushing.

The Three Zones You Need to Know

Zhangjiajie National Forest Park (South Gate) — The most visited entrance. Home to the Avatar Hallelujah Mountain (officially renamed “Southern Sky Column” in 2010). Access the Yuanjiajie plateau via cable car or the Bailong Elevator.

Tianzi Mountain — Less crowded than Yuanjiajie, stunning mist views in the early morning. The “Ghost Valley Plank Walk” here is genuinely thrilling.

Suoxiyu / Yangjiajie — The quietest of the three zones. Good for avoiding crowds and finding your own pillar views.

Bailong Elevator vs. Cable Car

The Bailong Elevator (World’s Tallest Outdoor Elevator) is fast but has long queues — up to 2 hours on busy days. Go early or late.

The cable cars are scenic and generally have shorter waits. The Tianmen Mountain cable car is separate (different park, different ticket).

Practical Tips

  • Get the Scenic Area bus pass — included in your ticket. The buses connect all zones and run every 10–15 minutes.
  • Wear layers. The plateau is 1,000m+ elevation. Even in summer, mornings are cool and fog is common.
  • Fog is your friend. Misty days create the most dramatic views. Check the weather but don’t cancel for fog.
  • Golden Whip Stream hike (7.5km, flat, follows a creek) is the best low-effort walk in the park. Do it in the afternoon when crowds thin.
