What to Expect
This is not a signposted trail. It follows forest tracks and occasional scramble sections to the secondary ridge of Tianmen Mountain, bypassing the tourist infrastructure entirely. You will see almost no other people.
Only attempt this if: You have experience navigating unmarked trails, are comfortable with exposed ridge scrambling, can read topographic maps, and can complete 10 km with 800 m elevation gain in a day.
Safety Notes
- Download the trail on AllTrails or maps.me before going — mobile signal is unreliable above 800 m
- Bring 2.5L water — no water sources after km 2
- Tell someone your plans and expected return time
- Do not attempt in wet or misty conditions — sections become slippery and navigation is harder
Getting There
Take a DiDi to the Tianmen Mountain National Forest Park lower gate (distinct from the cable car base station — confirm with the driver). The forest park gate is free to enter.
Practical Tips
- Start no later than 8am for a 6-hour out-and-back.
- The best navigation reference is an AllTrails map or similar GPS track downloaded before leaving the city.
- The summit views are comparable to the tourist area but without the crowds or glass walkways.
